How to choose a Web Host (Malaysia)?

Choosing a web host untuk host laman web anda is not easy. There are sooo many companies yang berbeza and banyak faktor yang perlu dipertimbangkan. So lets see:
- Lokasi (Location): If you are in Malaysia dan your audience pun in Malaysia, then it makes only sense to host your website in Malaysia (and not in the US or elsewhere)…why? Coz its faster. How to test? Do simple ping test. Make sure that the response time is less than 50ms…..kalau lebih (means slower), that means its near (in Malaysia) and thats a good sign.
- Ping Test for Maxhosting.com.my - 24ms - EXCELLENT
- Ping Test for Friendster (US) - 220ms - SLOW
- Price: Well harga sememangnya penting tetapi bukan segala2nya.What you are paying for is important. With current technologies, you should pay no more than RM500 setahun for shared hosting solution (depending on your needs la). What determines the price?
- Storage: the more they give you the more you pay. more bout this later.
- Bandwidth: the more you get the more you pay. more bout this later.
- Thats it! The rest like cpanel, email or domain percuma (free domain) are all just extra bonuses.
- Features: Based on my experience i woul and choose plans with the following basic features:
- at least 500mb-1gb storage.
- at least 5GB bandwidth per month
- lots of email accounts, ftp accounts, subdomains etc
- paling kurang 3-5 add-on domains
- php/mysql

- “Unlimited Storage & Bandwidth”: Well there is no such thing and its usually a marketing trick to get you to sign up. Why?
- Storage atau muatan adalah dikawal oleh hard-drive server. Shared hosting means it is a shared enviroment di mana several laman web share a single hard-drive. Just like on a pc or notebook, storage is limited by your harddrive.
- So why they offer “unlimited storage”? Coz the average website will only need 100-200MB! that’s it. Even to use 1gb pun is extremely difficult unless you host 1000s of images. Hence they know you will never use much more
- Same goes for bandwidth.
- This practice is called “overselling“. Is it illegal. Tak but it is misleading :)
- Support: Make sure that your comfortable with the hosting company of your choice. jika anda kurang berpengalaman, you’ll probably make a bunch of enquiries to the company so make sure you like them :)
- Technologies? Everyone nowadays offers very similar and up-to-date services. Most websites are hosted on linux server and offer cPanel to manage their website. There are others too like windows server and plesk web manager but that is all about preference.
- Testimonials: Online testimonials are ok but better still kalau you have a friend or kenalan yang actually ada pengalaman with the hosting company. Or google them.
